MK2 Standard sail - Class Legal, Class Compliant or Training Sail

Hmm. Interesting. It appears both non-legal sails have the proper insignias and are LaserPerformance products, par the symbol in the upper right corner of the page!

"Laser Standard MKII made from the same sail material as the International class legal version but without the button to save money.

There are three Laser sails, only ONE of which is currently legal for all competitions.
1. Class legal - Legal for all National & International competitions.
2. Class Compliant - Not Class legal, made from the same cloth and to the same specification as the class legal version but without ILCA button so are not legal for any competitions at present.
3. Training Sail - Not Class legal, made from lighter cloth to keep the cost down, again without the class legal button.

These are a very new product from Laser so we will update with any more info as soon as it is available"

Oh my. It's LaserPerformance trying to out-fake the fakers. I don't think ILCA is going to like this. I don't think I like this... it will just make the legal/illegal line fuzzier in people's minds, and make things harder to police.

Is LP trying to give the impression that $120 goes to the class for the sail button? I think the class may get $5 or $10, but it certainly isn't $120.

It would be interesting to compare the tolerances on the class legal and class compliant sail to see if this could explain the cost differential.

The "class-compliant" sails may be second-rate, sure. But there is something more fundamental about the pricing...

...that is, just the plain legality and the ability to race with a certain sail has a monetary value. That is in addition to whatever sum the ILCA gets for sail buttons. It's the same for all equipment: why do you think legal foils and spars cost more than illegal ones? Leaving the button off the sail simply subtracts that immaterial value. Including the ILCA share, at sailboats.co.uk it looks like it's between GBP 87 and 176 of the non-sale price, depending on the sail size.

Our area District Secretary bought a new Laser full rig from the local dealer about a year and a half ago. LP provided the boat with their "practice sail" but it looks so much like the class legal sail no one caught it until a full year later. That sail has been around a while now. The dealer got LP to provide a new class legal sail at no cost. I think LP was/is doing that to get around the money they owe the class legal maker.
