I run a length of elastic shock cord from either the out haul shackle or the grommet to the unused cleat on the boom. Silicone spray also really helps everything slide and spin properly.
When I sailed Optis I was taught to rig my sprit pole on the starboard side because on a starting line, most of the time boats are lined up on starboard and right off the starting line is when that 0.02 kts is most important. I am betting this holds true for the sunfish and now even non racers...
I sold mine two years ago but there is so much pressure on the spreaders while under sail that I didn't see it as a problem. The easiest thing would be to cut a thick pool noodle open and set it on the transom so the mast rests on the pool noodle and keeps the spreaders off the deck.
I've used random pieces of line for my laser when I've left the clew strap at home or one of my teammates "borrowed" it the day I didn't show up to practice. The velcro slides along the boom so much smoother than any line I've used has.
Good luck! I’m 18, started in optis, got my brothers laser when he went to college, and got a J/24 dirt cheap on eBay two years ago and have been fixing it up ever since. Do you have a local sailing club near you? Older sailors are a goldmine of info and help. Also, if you get the chance to race...
As creases go, unless there is damage along the creases then those aren’t bad compared to other sails I’ve seen. A thought for you to consider is making sure you don’t roll the sails too tightly and make sure there are no creases when you roll. If you flake the sail to save space then make sure...
Sail it in 12+ knots of wind for a few hours. The pressure in the sail should help get some of that out. I sail Lasers and J/24s and used to have a 14.2. The Laser sails and the J/24 genoas and spinnakers get flaked. Sometimes there are creases on the edges but after a day of sailing they're gone.
My gin pole is 3” diameter and 1/4” thick walls. I wouldn’t go any thinner on wall thickness, but I might get a slightly smaller diameter depending on what you’re comfortable with because my gin pole is heavy. I cut mine from 20’ to 17’ to save a little weight. The drawback of the shorter pole...
I'm looking for an adjustable mast step/mast butt (I've seen both names). They aren't on the APS or Harken websites. Would Waterline systems have them? If anyone has an unused one I'm Interested.
I used a JY 15 mast from an old boat twice on my J/24. The problem is a lack of a lower set of stays which means the mast bends and looks like it's about to buckle. Also, the rivets in the spreaders (especially on an older JY mast which ours was) can't handle the load. The reasons we only used...
I am relatively new to the class so I am not 100% sure but I believe that the skipper does have to. If you register with a skipper and co-skipper things might be different but the skipper must be a class member
I recently bought hull number 4464 and am fixing it up to race. The boat currently has standard hull paint on it. I sanded the old paint down a bit because I took it to North Americans in Charleston as part of a junior team earlier this month, so I need to paint it soon before barnacles start to...
