Wearing a helmet is no so silly for some people. My 80 lb son did his first solo on a 1974 vintage Laser with 10kts of wind. I made him wear his skateboard helmet just this once. Notice in the picture that the boat is barely touching the water!

A 1200 or 1500 grit is adaquate and gives a similar finish to rubbing compound. A rubber sanding block seems to work better than a buffing wheel, as a buffer is designed to 'melt' paint. A 600 grit can be used to knock-off bad scratches.
