Hiking Straps - add padding?

My hiking straps are in good shape but I would prefer that they have a bit of padding for my feet. Anybody ever seen/heard of any product you can attach to existing straps to make them padded?
 
I haven't tried this, but it seems that foam pipe insulation would work in this application. You could slip it over the end of the strap if you disconnected one end or there is a type of insulation that is split with adhesive on one side of the split. It is inexpensive, so it could be easily experimented with.
 
I've actually tried the foam pipe insulation for a different application and I found they tend to shred easily. Haven't thought about trying fuzzy seatbelt wraps...
