How to repair lower mast section that is slightly out of round?

The lower mast section where the upper mast inserts is slightly out of round making it a difficult and two person job to put the mast together and take it apart. What is the best way to return the mast to the original shape so the upper section slides in and out more easily. The damage is not severe, just slightly oval.

if you're going to try and correct it, even just so you can put the end plug in on an end over end, be carefull not to damage the mast, a little can go along way, use a piece of wood in between to protect the surface
