We've decided yes, and here's why. We have about 8 old Lasers owned by the instructional program at our club. They all have old sails made by Fisher. If we ban Intensity sails, we'd have to ban the use of these old sails, and we'd lose half of our fleet, since the boats are constantly loaned out to club members who sail with us. We are using Intensity sails since we have a precedent for using practice sails in our club races.
In the Cedar Point (Westport, CT) Frostbite Program, we consider it to be real racing, not practice, so we try to enforce the Class Rules. People buy new boats, and new sails, to stay competitive in our program. When this question was discussed at an informal meeting last month, there was a clear concensus to NOT allow non-Class-legal sails.
