Need Help With A Price For 1975 Vintage Laser

Hello. I am currently looking at a vintage 1975 laser for my husband for the cottage. I am not very experienced in what to look for. The boat has never been kept outside and was always taken out of the lake (no salt water) after every use. It still light to lift and relatively stiff. The hull is bright yellow and not faded and the rudder is in great shape. Still in wood. The dagger board (fibreglass) has a few nicks and scratches but looks fine. The only concern is a repair done, on the bottom of the hull, many years ago around where the front of the dagger board slides up and down. There was a repair done but the gel coat looks like it needs repair. It has been sitting in a heated garage now for several years. The seller wants $2400. I have been looking at prices but they do not come close to that. It comes with a sail which is in good shape but a bit soft, a dolly, a cover, and all the rigging. My concern is the repair on the bottom where the dagger board comes up and down. My friend says it is normal to see wear and tear in this area but not in the front - rather in the back on the bottom of the hull. I apologize in advance if my terms are not correct....

Any comments on the price and what it is worth, as well as repairs to the gel coat, would be helpful. Thank you.

I think $2400 is double what it is worth. For that amount you should be able to get a nice boat built in the '90s.

Even not knowing the current exchange rate I would say the boat is over priced. Over here in the UK boats go down to around £500 and never really drop much below that unless they are an absolute wreck or a hull-only with no fittings.

From various other threads I have seen on here I would say the boat is worth around $1000 maybe a little more at a push if it is pristine and needs no work (which it is not from what you have said).

I would look around for a newer boat (as others have said). If you are happy to pay the $2400 for one you should get a much newer boat (as has already been said on here).

$2400 is WAY way too much for a 1975, maybe check to see if it has some gold plating?

This are typical asking prices that you'll see in the US currently:

http://newyork.craigslist.org/wch/boa/2922602140.html $2200 for a 1999

http://newjersey.craigslist.org/boa/2878036547.html $1200 for a 1990

http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/boa/2896531035.html $1500 for a 1981

I'd put the 1975 around $600-800USD if it doesn't leak and doesn't need alot of work, if it needs alot of work, I'd maybe take it for free.

actually the dolly and spars are worth something, if you could get them for a decent price you can find a hull in better shape, then give the hull away if it needs alot of work
